CASES

There is a set of cases in CARA, each with a name of the child who was the focus of that particular case investigation. For instance, Kayla, Sean, Kabir, Deanna are the names of four cases in CARA. Figure 1 displays the case screen for case Kayla. Immediately below the main site links (1) is a drop-down menu (2) that allows the user to immediately display another case. Clicking the 'Case Abstract' button (4)  displays a brief summary of the case in a popup window.

SCENES

Each case is divided into a number of scenes (written in narrative form), usually on the basis of the chronological development of the case during investigation. The number of scenes in a case will vary depending on the length of the case. In Fig. 1. you will notice that you are looking at Scene 1 of Kayla, as specified just below the name of the case.

To read the entire case, the user accesses each scene with the help of the navigation buttons (7).  As shown in the enlarged view below, the navigation buttons allow you to move to the first, previous, next, and last scenes in the current case.  A narrative for each scene is presented on the lower left of the screen (9).

The 'Search' button (5)  at the top of the screen shot takes the user to that feature in CARA which is capable of executing a search for specific assessment factors. (The search feature will be discussed later.)

FACTORS

All of the scenes in each case have been examined in light of a set of global Assessment Factors.  A listing of these global factors is available through the drop-down menu at the top of the screen (3). Selecting a factor from the menu displays a popup window containing a definition, or commentary.  This commentary is drawn from the research literature and discusses the relevance of the factor to assessment in general.

Factors specific to the current scene

In the middle left section of the screen appear two buttons (8): Show factors/Issues and Clear.  By clicking the 'Show factors/issues' button, additional information is displayed in the right frame.  See Figure 2.
